WALES ORGAN DONATION CAMPAIGN

Organ Donor Awareness Publicity Campaign

The Minister for Health and Social Services Edwina Hart AM has noted a business case presented by the Kidney Wales Foundation asking for funding for an Organ Donation Awareness publicity campaign. The Minister has agreed to write to the Kidney Wales Foundation offering a grant of up to £100,000 to deliver the campaign.

Date of decision: 21 February 2008 Welsh Assembly Government Statement of information:

In Wales, more than 25% of the population or over 749, 000 people are registered on the Organ Donation register, which is higher than the UK average. However, there are 327 patients in Wales currently waiting for an organ transplant. Many people die every year in Wales while waiting for a transplant. The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to increasing the rate of organ transplants.

On 21 November 2007, the Minister for Health and Social Services made a commitment in plenary to launch a Welsh publicity campaign in collaboration with Welsh charities to raise awareness of the issue of organ donation, and specifically to highlight the importance of discussing the issue with loved ones and to register as an organ donor. The Minister for Health and Social Services has been asked to consider and approve a business case form Welsh charities and to provide £100,000 towards the cost of the campaign with the charities providing £35,000.

The campaign is intended to run from Spring 2008 through to Autumn 2008 and will mainly consist of TV advertising. This will be supported with campaign literature such as posters and leaflets and the internet websites. Additional supporting information and advice will be made available to the public on the issue of organ donation and how to register as an organ donor. The campaign message will also be presented at key public events held in Wales throughout the year including the Eisteddfod.
